PRE-MEDICAL PHILOSOPHY
We believe that God calls His people to specific areas of service in
his Kingdom and we have seen God faithfully use Covenant to bring
together gifts, desires and opportunities in students’ lives that He
uses to call them to work as physicians. The consideration of a medical
calling presents a wide range of challenges. Not only is access to
medical training highly competitive, but inappropriate social and
cultural motivations for pursuing medicine are especially seductive and
common. Media-hyped glamour images of hero-physicians, family
expectations for high achieving students, individual expectations of
status and material wealth, or even the mythic status of a
“missionary-doctor” in the churches can easily distort the basic issue
of discerning and faithfully responding to God’s calling in this area.
At Covenant the relationship between the premedical advisor and
premedical students is highly personalized and involves extensive
mentoring across the spectrum of personal, spiritual and academic issues
that arise over the course of premedical undergraduate studies. Some
areas of special focus in premedical advising: discussions concerning
student motivations, discernment concerning a student’s strengths and
weaknesses, exploration of viable alternatives to medical studies, the
choice of a major or majors (a double major is a good option for some
students), the choice of specific coursework, relevant work/volunteer
experiences, preparation for the Medical College Admissions Test and
managing the medical college admissions process.
