There are three possible tracks within the biology major. Each track includes a standard set of courses in general biology, chemistry and physics, but allows students to focus in different areas with in the discipline of biology. The first year curriculum is identical for each track so that students can draw from their first year experiences in choosing a track. The Biomedical
option: This track begins with
a two-semester sophomore course in molecular and cellular biology that
includes extensive laboratory experience in the major modern techniques
in this area of biology. Popular upper division electives in the track
include courses in immunology, cancer biology, biochemistry, and
advanced microbiology. This track is especially recommended for
premedical students, those considering graduate school in biomedical
research and for those interested in biotechnology. The Environmental option: This track includes courses that focus on ecology, wildlife biology and natural history. Covenant is affiliated with the AuSable Institute for Environmental Studies which offers field courses at several locations around the world. Students in the environmental track are required to take 3 course through AuSable, typically during the summer following the sophomore or the junior year. Fellowships and scholarships for AuSable courses are available.
